Pattern testing is one of those behind-the-scenes parts of sewing that always feels a bit magical to me. There’s something very special about being invited into the early life of a design — seeing a pattern before it officially enters the world, getting to interpret it in your own fabrics, and knowing your feedback helps shape the final version.
So you can imagine my excitement when I was chosen to pattern test the Gabriola Blouse for Brightside Fabric Co.
I was genuinely thrilled. I’ve admired their aesthetic for a while — effortless, wearable pieces with beautiful lines — so being part of the testing process felt like a real treat.
As always, I couldn’t stop at just one version.
For my first Gabriola Blouse, I reached straight for a textile that had been quietly waiting for its moment: a beautifully weighty vintage linen tablecloth, adorned with delicate Chinese imagery. The fabric has that perfect heavy linen drape — structured yet soft — which gave the blouse a lovely, almost sculptural feel. The print itself is subtle but full of character, exactly the sort of piece that feels both wearable and quietly distinctive.
My second version couldn’t have been more different, and I love that about this pattern. I used a lightweight white cotton that had been sitting patiently in my stash for years (we all have those fabrics). This version has a completely different mood — airy, relaxed, and wonderfully easy. It’s the kind of blouse that becomes an instant wardrobe staple, the piece you reach for without thinking.
That versatility is really what stood out to me during testing. The Gabriola Blouse works beautifully across different weights and textures, which is always something I look for in a pattern.
And I have to say — Brightside Fabric Co absolutely delivered on clarity. The instructions were exceptionally well written, thoughtfully laid out, and genuinely enjoyable to follow. No head-scratching moments, no guesswork, just a smooth, satisfying sewing experience. Everything came together exactly as intended, which is always the sign of a beautifully drafted pattern.
It’s such a pleasure to sew patterns where you feel guided rather than challenged.
Overall, I couldn’t recommend Brightside Fabric Co’s patterns more highly. The designs are lovely, the instructions are incredibly clear, and the finished garments feel polished and wearable. A real joy from start to finish.
Now, of course, I’m already eyeing up what to make next… ✨
